The goals of the present work are to compare various method to compute (Tz) from altimeter data in the Portuguese coastal environment. The significant wave height (Hs) altimeter Ku-band measurements
provided by various satellites and the computed Tz are compared with buoy data according to the collocation criteria proposed in the literature. Three different algorithms for deducing the wave period from the altimeter data are described and the computed (Tz) are compared with buoy data. In statistical terms, a good fitting of the altimeter wave parameters to the buoy data was found in the Portuguese continental nearshore.
