Crashworthy Side Structures for Improved Collision Damage Survivability of Coasters and Medium Size Ro Ro Cargo Ships (CRASHCOASTER)

Duration: 01.01.2000 – 31.12.2003 (42 months)

Coordination: TNO (The Netherlands)

Partners: Instituto Superior Técnico (Portugal), Estaleiros Navais de Viana do Castelo (Portugal), Bodewes “Volharding” Fowhol, Flensburger Schiffbau Gesellschaft (Germany), Chalmers University of Technology (Sweden), Rederi Ab Sea-Link (Portugal), Wavenborg Shipping; Germanischer Lloyd (Germany), Bureau Veritas (France), Technical University of Denmark (Denmark), Delft university of Technology (The Netherlands)

Funding Entity: EU Growth Programme

The objective of this project is to develop classified coaster and Ro-Ro cargo structures which comply the new IMO safety regulations, without increase of freeboat, increase of width, increase of GM, increased compartimentation and without fixed transverse bulkheads(s). The sicentific and technological objectives of this project are: 1. Develop a methodology, to be used during ship design, to calculate the effect of the crashworthiness of the side structure on the probability of survival with respect to damage stability; 2. Dnhancement of existing crash worthiness assessment methods (damage prediction tools) with a predictive power of at least 90%. 3. Design and analyse two coaster type side structures and two Ro-Ro cargo type side structures with superior crashworthiness. 4. Validation of designs and damage prediction tools based on full/half scale coliision experiments. 5. Provide technical evidence in order to obtain approval from the legislative authorities and classification societies.
