Operational Wave Forecast using Artificial Intelligence (WAVEFAI)

Duration: 01.08.2020 - 31.07.2024 (48 months)

Coordination: Instituto Superior Técnico

Partners: Instituto Superior Técnico-CENTEC (Leader); National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA); Instituto de Astronomia, Geofísica e Ciências Atmosféricas da Universidade de São Paulo (IAG)

Funding Entity: Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology (CIRCNA/OCT/0300/2019)

The aim of this project is to develop feedforward neural networks algorithms for post-processing ensemble forecasts in the Atlantic Ocean, in order to improve the predictability of winds and waves beyond 10 days - which was the upper limit of a previous project recently concluded and funded by NOAA, described by Campos et al. (2019). The main goal is to develop artificial neural network models (NN) applied to nonlinear ensemble averaging, which is an approach that expands the conservative arithmetic ensemble mean to a nonlinear mapping that better captures the differences among the ensemble members and reduces the systematic and scatter errors of forecasts.
