Dynamics of Floating Platforms and Shuttle Tanker during Offloading Operations (FNLG)

Duration: 01.05.2007-30.04.2010 (36 months)

Coordination: Instituto Superior Técnico

Funding Entity: Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology

The aim of the project is to investigate the dynamics and hydrodynamics of a new concept for the production, storage and affloading of liquefied natural gas (Floating Production Storage and offloating sustems for production of LNG - FLNG). Presently, offshore gas fields are developed by building a gas line to shore. The alternative to be investigated consists on liquefying the gas onboard floating platform which is moored near the gas field and affload it to a shuttle tanker which transports the gas to shore. There are potential economic, safety and environmental advantages in liquefying the natural gas on the prodution barge and offloading it to shuttle gas carrier. The FLNG system is very complex and there are still several technological problems to be solved before implementation of the concept.
