To define a standard-based infrastructure for the management of maritime processes that integrates state-of-the-art information and communication technology. Focus will be on the usage and enhancement of standards for product and process data exchange, i.e. the standard for the exchange of product model data (STEP, ISO 10303) and the workflow management coalition (WfMC) standard. The scope of integration includes applications for workflow management, maintenance planning, ship design and construction, and approval and certification. To develop a tool kit that models, facilitates and co-ordinates the interaction between companies forming a virtual organisation in the maritime industry. This tool kit shall be adaptable to other industrial contexts than only the maritime one. It shall be easily installable and configurable, and shall be as independent of any hardware platform and software environment as possible. To meet these requirements Marvin will favour web-based agents that are written in JAVA. To validate the proposed infrastructure and tools within two separate scenarios, one for emergency repair and one for planned maintenance. Different groups of partners and applications will perform the validation so that the generic nature of the tools may be proven. To recommend legal precautions and means for running a maritime virtual organisation within the current legal framework. The role of today's legal documents, such as those used in emergency situations, will be investigated. Issues concerning data protection and security, intellectual property and confidentiality are in scope of Marvin, as well as studies within the areas of jurisdiction and choice of law. To make available to a wide European audience the findings and results of Marvin. The software results will be incorporated into products including the maritime enterprise integration tool itself. The enhancements to standards will be brought to the relevant standardization bodies for incorporation into emerging standards. The methods will be disseminated through maritime organizations, such as EMSA (European Marine STEP Association), and through participation in the annual maritime cluster reporting days.
