The utilisation of High Tensile Steels in shipbuilding can provide the means of increased payload capacity and lower building and operating costs. The most common steels used in shipbuilding today have a yield strength of 235 Mpa - 355 Mpa. The high yield strength steels considered for this project include steels with a yield stress up to 690 Mpa. Service experience has shown that the application of high tensile steels involves a high risk of early and costly fatigue failure. It is expected that this project will offer the theoretical and engineering foundation for design, construction, inspection and maintenance of more competitive ships by: - the implementation of a probability based design methodology for the design of ship structures for the use of high yield strength steels; - the development of models for prediction of the fatigue strength of ships and the support of their implementation into design procedures; - the rational assessment method of safety margins enabling long term integrity estimates thus facilitating maintenance and life extension measures; - implementation of these results in design standards and guidelines.
