Projects

Optimizing Wave Energy Converters (OPWEC)

Duration: 01.06.2016 - 31.05.2019 (36 months)

Coordination: Engineering Faculty of the University of Oporto

Partners: Instituto Superior Técnico

Funding Entity: Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology (PTDC/MAR-TEC/6984/2014)

The objective of the project is to develop and technically assess two different technologies for wave energy conversion using numerical and physical modelling, as well as to design cost effective mooring systems for nearshore and offshore installation. To attain those goals, in-house developed, open-source numerical models and commercial software will be modified to properly reproduce the hydrodynamic behavior of both technologies and to include the non-linear effects related to the mooring system and the power-take-off (PTO) in both frequency and time domains.
