Operability and extreme loads on offshore floating wind turbines (FWT)

Duration: 01.02.2012 – 31.01.2015 (36 months)

Coordination: Instituto Superior Técnico

Partners: Wave Energy Centre (CEO - WEC); EDP Inovação, SA (EDPI); Instituto de Engenharia Mecânica e Gestão Industrial (INEGI/UP); One Ocean - Engenharia e Arquitectura Naval Lda (OCEAN)

Funding Entity: Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (PTDC/EME-MFE/120593/2010)

The objective of the project is to investigate the operability of floating wind turbines (FWT) in wind and waves and the extreme loads on the structure and mooring lines. Numerical tools and procedures will be developed to calculate the related system responses. Specific objectives of the project are: a) Develop and implement a numerical model to calculate the coupled dynamic response of FWT under the action of wind and waves; b) Using the EDP concept as a case study, characterize the operability of the system at the West coast of Portugal – develop active control systems to minimize the platform motions and improve the operational envelop; c) Estimate the extreme motions of the platform and the design loads on the mooring lines and on the structure. Test the applicability of the existing stochastic methods to determine the design loads.
