Freak Waves Generation on the Ocean (FREAK WAVES)

Duration: 01.06.2002-31.05.2005 (36 months)

Coordination: Instituto Superior Técnico

Partners: UAG - FWI, Institute of Oceanology of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences (IO-BAS), St. Petersburg State University, Faculty of Geography and Geology(SPSU), Institute of Applied Physics of the Russian Academy of Sciences (IAPRAS), State Scientific Centre of the Russian Federation, Artic and Antarctic Reserch Institute (AARI).

Funding Entity: EU - Programme INTAS

The main objectives of the present project are to investigate the field conditions for freak wave generation, taking into account weather features, current speed distribution, bottom bathymetry, wind wave generation scenario etc; to develop a physical explanation of freak wave formation due to ocean wave interaction with non-uniform current; to study the effect of freak wave generation due to dispersive wave modulation; to create mathematical model of freak wave development; to produce numerical simulation of freak wave generation and evolution; to develop the theory of probabilistic analysis and simulation for estimation of freak wave occurrence risk under driving of rare metocean factors; to provide practical recommendation for ship’s navigation.
