Witkowska, M. e Guedes Soares, C. (2009), “Ultimate strength of stiffened plates with local damage on the stiffener”, Analysis and Design of Marine Structures, Guedes Soares, C. and Das, P. K. (Eds.); Taylor & Francis Group, London, U.K., pp. 145-154

The behaviour and ultimate strength of locally damaged stiffened plates is investigated. The damage is in a form of local imperfection and the affected element is the stiffener. Finite element analysis is carried out with several varying parameters like the location of the dent, its size as well as the number of them. Cases with one or two existing damages are analysed. Also several different global post-welding deflections are considered, including the initial deformation of the stiffener. It has been found that the local damage on the stiffener can change the collapse mode of the plate and decrease its ultimate strength. Reduction of strength can be significant, however it depends on the location of the dent as well as the initial global deflection. The behaviour of the plate with two damages depends mostly on only one of the locations which is more dominant.
