Comparative experimental data has been obtained for GRP laminates, and Aluminium 5083 and steel circular fully-clamped plates subjected to lateral impact. The metal plates were much more resistant to perforation than the laminated plates, but the behaviour up to perforation was more complex. A decrease in maximum force and an increase in maximum and final deflections, and absorbed energy was seen when fibre damage of the composite materials became significant. Both composite material and metal plates suffered damage at very low incident energies. However, the composite delamination damage would in practice be much less visible than that for metal plates. Care must be taken to ensure that relevant comparisons are made; flexural stiffness equivalence has been used here, but if strength, thickness, or weight equivalence would have been considered the results would have differed in each case.
