(2008), “Parametric Study on the Collapse Strength of Rectangular Plates with Localized Imperfections under In-plane Compression”, International Shipbuilding Progress, Vol. 55, pp. 63-85

The influence of imperfections on the collapse strength of plate elements was the object of study of many authors in the past and it is today well known and accepted. The numbers of studies about localized imperfections is very small and mostly address the problem of deformations induced by welding. Yet, often accidents aboard ships induce local deformations upon plates, which reduce their strength. However, they are still able to contribute to the overall strength of the ship structure. It is even common to see ships operating with damaged plates. The strength of these damaged plates is therefore important for ship operations. It is the objective of this study to investigate which parameters are important for the collapse strength of the damaged plates. Several investigation units were involved in this study, which allows to perform a more thoroughly study. The plate model considered had global imperfections, which can be the result of both the plate fabrication process and the ship fabrication process (e.g. welding). Localized imperfections simulate the damage of the plates, adding these to the global ones gives the total imperfections of the damaged element.
