Single plate models are normally used to study the effect of initial deformation on the compressive strength. However, the implied assumption is that adjacent plates have asymmetrical imperfections in relation to the model boundaries, which is not the common case found on ships. In a ship, adjacent plate elements have a tendency to have symmetric imperfections in relation to their boundaries, in spite of, not always having the same amplitude (symmetrical only in shape). The transverse models studied here are composed of three and five panels. First, a comparison between results of models of panels having asymmetric imperfections and single plates is made; this will allow evaluating the ability of the panel model to properly simulate the single plate. Following this, the results obtained for a panel model having symmetric imperfections is confronted with the results of the previous models. The asymmetrical and symmetrical models of the panel give respectively the lowest and highest strengths possible (imperfections in adjacent plates with different amplitudes have “in between” strengths) allowing to establish limits to the variation of the strength. This shows that using a single plate can be conservative or unconservative, depending of the plate slenderness and shape of initial deflections. It is concluded that for design purposes it will in general be enough to consider assemblies of three plates, as the results for five plate assemblies are not much different.
