Ribeiro e Silva, S., Tello, M. e Guedes Soares, C. (2009), “Seakeeping Performance of Fishing Vessels Under Operational Loads”, Proceedings of the 13th Congress of International Maritime Association of the Mediterranean (IMAM´09), 12-15 Outubro, Istanbul, Turkey

The paper presents a seakeeping study of a set of fishing vessels, and discusses the seakeeping performance under different operational conditions. The dynamic response of the ship in waves depends on the wave climate of the ocean area where the ship operates, and also existing external load such as fishing gears loads. The frequency domain transfer functions are obtained using a strip theory method, and viscous roll damping corrections are introduced for different advance speeds. A simplified model of the interaction of the fishing gear components with the vessel on a steady tow condition has been proposed. The sensitivity analysis are carried out for a group of six fishing vessels with different hull forms and dimensions from the Portuguese, Peruvian and Spanish fleet, operating in the respective coastal areas. The results obtained permit the assessment of the fishing gear loads effect onto the ship’s dynamic responses, and allows comparisons of seakeeping performance for different ship types, advance speed, and wave encounter angles.
