Sensible interaction forces are typically observed in encounter situations and overtaking manoeuvres, especially in confined areas when the ships are passing close to each other or in berthing manoeuvres when a ship is approaching a jetty or a floating platform. Mathematical models for the interaction forces implemented in existing ship handling simulators are often based on experimental data or simplified hydrodynamic formulations, like the strip theory or the ellipsoidal approximation of the hull, or even on simplistic heuristic concepts presuming presence of some constant repulsion/attraction field around the ships’ hulls. All these method can become unreliable in more complicated situations of arbitrary mutual orientation and motion of vessels as happens, for instance in tug-assisted operations or when, say, a shuttle LNG carrier is manoeuvring near the floating platform.
