This paper investigates the efficiency of the application of Response Surface Methods in structural reliability analysis of steel plates with random fields of corrosion. The limit state function is defined in terms of the ultimate strength of the corroded plate calculated by nonlinear finite element analysis. The approach is first illustrated with an example of plates with random imperfections and material properties, and the technique is then applied to plates with random fields of corrosion discretized using the Expansion Optimal Linear Estimation method. The stochastic model of the amplitude of the initial distortions of the plates is defined based on measurements of fabrication distortions of ship plating undertaken in the process of construction of ships and the probabilistic characteristics of the random field of corrosion are defined based on available statistical data of the corrosion in plates of existing bulk carriers.
