In some oceanographic applications it is necessary to separate the sea states presented in the energy spectrum and identify the time sequences of these sea states. To make correlations between time evolutions of the sea with meteorological forcing it is important to identify the sequence of each part of the energy spectrum. To solve this problem a program was developed to follow an initial sea state using a mathematical tracking procedure. It is based in a number called “similarity index” between one point of the series and three previous points. The criteria use wave parameters Hs (significant wave height), Tp (spectral peak period) and Dir (spectral peak wave direction) to calculate the similarity index. The program select points that have the highest similarity index as a part of the same group, following the time sequence of waves.
