A wave prediction system was implemented and tested in the Madeira Archipelago. This is based on the two state-of-the-art spectral phase averaging wave models WAM and SWAN. Ocean scale simulations covering the entire North Atlantic basin provide the boundary conditions for the archipelago. Three SWAN levels were successively connected to the generation area. For the first, the spherical coordinates were still maintained, while the second and third simulations were performed using Cartesian coordinates in order to account better for some local effects. Thus a detailed horizontal analysis concerning the effects of diffraction and triads was made for the last two levels. This was first focused on the most energetic cases while as a subsequent step were also analysed wave patterns corresponding to average energetic conditions. Two buoys located south of Madeira Island were considered for the model system validation.
