The assessment of the influence of geometrical imperfections on strength of thin plates may be significantly affected by the choice of the measure of the imperfections. The commonly applied amplitude to thickness ratio is a local measure not reflecting overall warping of plate; moreover it does not represent a norm in the space of the imperfections. The introduced integral energy measure of initial deflections of plates is based on the strain energy of the linearised plate buckling problem (Sadovský, 1978). It defines a norm and corresponding scalar product in the space of variational solutions of the linearised and non-linear post-buckling problem. The energy measure allows small parameter theoretical results establishing a relationship between perfect and imperfect buckling and generally showing the buckling mode as the most dangerous initial deflection shape in terms of the minimum of potential energy and maximum of strain energy (Sadovský, 1978, 1983). For calculations of plate strength usually FEM codes allowing for large deflections and elastic-plastic material behaviour are used.
