Andreev, A. e Guedes Soares, C. (2006), “Collapse Strength of Plates with Localised Corrosion Damages from the Bottom of Ship Tanks”, Proceedings of the 8th International Conference on Marine Sciences and Technologies (Black Sea´06), 25-27 Setembro, Varna, Bulgaria, pp. 22-27

The results from a numerical study of the effect of local corrosion damages on the ultimate compressive strength of stiffened plate elements are presented. The plates studied have dimensions typical of the ones found on the bottom of ship cargo tanks with representative damages due to localised corrosion. A brief review is made of representative corrosion damages found in tankers and bulk carriers, to justify the sizes of damage considered in the study. In order to investigate this effect, a parametric analysis of the collapse strength of the elements was carried on with different size, depth and position of the corroded area along the plate. Different breadth to thickness plate ratios and stiffener dimensions were considered as well. The load-shortening behaviour of plates was obtained using a general-purpose non-linear finite element code. Finally practical means are proposed to predict the collapse strength of the compressed plates with analysed damaged.
