Ship routing is a technique used to optimize a vessel’s track due to several intrinsic, environmental and administrative factors. This paper presents a GIS based system that takes advantage of geo-spatial algebra and advanced geo-spatial analysis to determine the best route between two ports. Several thematic layers, including weather and sea state forecasts, are scale harmonized, weighted and combined into a cost matrix that is then used to establish the least cost route. This multicriteria based system can be set for multi-destination purposes and theme weights can be adjusted, case by case, to better fit a certain scenario. The outcome is a very flexible and expandable system. Users can add any number of factors for a certain route as long as they have a geo-spatial distribution. A prototype for the shortest cost route between Lisbon and New York is presented for algorithm demonstration.
