The average wave steepness defined in terms of the significant wave height and the zero-crossing wave period (or the spectral peak period) represents an important characteristic of a sea state as well as for the design of marine structures. For design purposes extreme values of the average wave steepness are of particular interest. They may be determined from the existing standards or evaluated from empirical expressions, theoretical formulas, or directly from wave data. Depending upon the procedure applied, different type of uncertainties will be related to the wave steepness estimates. In the present study the average wave steepness derived from recently developed global wave databases is compared with the one estimated from the Global Wave Statistics visual observations, which are currently used for ship design and is compared also with Shipborne Wave Recorder data. The related uncertainties are discussed. The study is limited to a selected ocean area in the North Atlantic.
