The scope of the European Thematic Network SAFERELNET is the integrated treatment of the important aspects of design, production and operation of industrial products and systems. The main emphasis is on the use of risk and reliability based methods from the point of view of balancing the economic aspects associated with providing predefined safety levels, with the associated costs of maintenance and availability. Different industrial sectors are involved and the transport sector is represented as it offers a wide range of possible applications of reliability and risk-based techniques and approaches. In the paper an overview of the actual applications of such methods and techniques across Europe within the transport sector will be given.
