This paper reports work carried out in the scope of a project to optimise the compartment definition of a passenger Ro-Ro ship from the viewpoint of damage stability, evaluated using probabilistic methods. Some existing passenger Ro-Ro ships were selected for this study and modelled using standard commercial software. Its compartments were defined in terms of relevant parameters such as depth to main deck, number of transverse bulkheads below main deck, location of longitudinal bulkheads above and below the main deck, length of lower hold (if any), location of double-bottom and others that might be relevant. A set of computer programs were developed to provide an interface between the optimisation software and the stability calculation software. These programs perform the following tasks: translate the parametric definition of the ship's subdivision into a geometry file suitable for processing by the stability software; evaluate the ship's lightweight and centre of gravity, for each subdivision, in a simplified way; prepare and perform the calculation of the attained subdivision index based on the ship's subdivision and loading information.
