Rodrigues Branco, J.N. e Guedes Soares, C. (2005), “Mapping of Shell Plates of Double Curvature into Plane Surfaces”, Journal of Ship Production, Vol. 21, nº4, pp. 248-257

According to the ship’s type, 2/5 to 2/3 of its hull shells are compound-curved plates. The Gaussian curvature of their surfaces is not zero. At the present time, the forming process of these plates is not rationalized, thus it is conducted on empirical basis and requires forming experts. In most cases the times spent in their fabrication are uncertain and higher than the acceptable, tacking in consideration the times spent in the fabrication of developable shell plates. If the surface of a plate is close to a cylindrical or a conical surface, that is, if the average longitudinal radius of the curved plate surface is higher than 130 metres, the shell plate boundary lines can be lofted by existing development methods. The bending and the twist of the shell plate are obtained with a rolling machine once reckoned the insertion direction. The necessary adjustments, to get the small longitudinal curvature, are obtained by line heating or by pressing. Under these conditions the shell plate periphery can be cut on a numerical controlled thermal cutting machine before the forming operation. Therefore the cut is done with good quality and productivity.
