This paper addresses questions related with the assessment and management of safety and reliability of industrial products, systems and structures in different industrial sectors. The paper intends to identify gaps in the practice in different industrial sectors. Barriers to the wider use of risk and reliability methods in the design and operation of installations are also identified and possible ways for overcoming these barriers are suggested. Finally, this paper focuses on drawing similarities and key differences between the sectors and aims to identify where best practice can be found on various technological areas. Key issues and industrial needs to be taken into account by the approaches for risk and reliability assessment are identified and discussed.
