The estimation of the performance and the exhaust emissions of a marine engine is an important step during the ship early design stage in order to choose the efficient ship propeller and to verify the compliance with the EEDI requirements and the exhaust emissions limitations defined by the International Maritime Organization. In this paper, a surrogate model is developed based on the response surface methodology to estimate the performance and the exhaust emissions of two four-stroke marine turbocharged diesel engines for different speeds and loads. The response surface is obtained based on data generated from 1D engine simulation software. A polynomial regression model is used to generate equations of brake specific fuel consumption, CO2 and NOx emissions of the selected engine as functions of the engine speed and load. These generated equations can be further used to predict the behavior of the selected engines or similar engines.
