Emplyoing the measured data on distorsions of stiffened plating in ships as well as buckling and localised shapes, the influence of initial deflections on collapse strength of thin rectangular plates in longitudinal compression is studied. Particularly, the idea of normalising the initial deflections by energy measure instead of amplitude is investigated.
