Diaz, H.M. and Guedes Soares, C. (2021), “A multi-criteria approach to evaluate floating offshore wind farms siting in the Canary Islands (Spain)”, Energies, Vol. 14, 865 (18 pages).

This study presents a methodological framework for floating offshore wind farms site selection with a specific case study of the Canary Islands. The frame is based on the combined use of multi-criteria decision-making methods (MCDM) and Geographical Information Systems (GIS). At the first stage of the analysis, the unsuitable areas for the deployment of turbines are identified through the development of a GIS database that produces thematic maps representing exclusion criteria. Then, at the second stage of the analysis, available marine areas are evaluated and ranked using the Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP), based on technical, economic, and environmental factors. The AHP's implementation is supported by the developed GIS database, eliminating the subjectivity significantly in judgments. The study also compared the solutions of the decision problem obtained with the use of PROMETHEE (Preference Ranking Organization METHod for Enrichment of Evaluations), ELECTRE III (ELimination Et Choix Traduisant la Realité), TOPSIS (Technique for Order Preferences by Similarity to Ideal Solution) and WSA (Weighted Sum Algorithm) methods. The main output of this study is the provision of an objective and realistic overview of floating offshore wind farm siting and the contribution to minimize the environmental impacts and to reduce the social conflicts between stakeholders.
