Goncalves, M., Bernardino, M. and Guedes Soares, C. (2021), “Assessing climate change effects on the wave energy in the Canary Islands”, Developments in Renewable Energies Offshore, Guedes Soares, C. (Ed.), Taylor and Francis, London, UK, pp. 19-25.

To assess the potential for wave energy exploitation in the long term, the evolution of wave resource over the 21st century is studied in the context of a changing climate. To produce the wave information in the Canary Islands, spectral boundary conditions from WWIII wave model are used to force the transformation model SWAN, to study the evolution of the waves. With bathymetry provided from GEBCO (General Bathymetric Chart of the Ocean) The CORDEX-African initiative provides regional high-resolution climate scenarios for different African domains. and the wind input fields used here are from this data base, with a time resolution of 6 hours, provided over a horizontal grid of 0.44.x0.44. resolution, interpolated to 0.25.x0.25., the simulations are performed two 30-year periods between 1990-2019 and 2020-2049. A descriptive statistical analysis of wave energy is performed for the two 30-year periods.
