Carvalho, A. and Sobral, J. (2020), Availability of Critical Industrial Equipment based on a FMEA-AHP Analysis, 0th European Safety and Reliability Conference and the 15th Probabilistic Safety Assessment and Management Conference (ESREL2020-PSAM15), Venice, Italy & Online, pp. 2705-2712

Operational availability has been an important topic for industry due to the underlying objectives of what companies are looking to sustain and expand their business assuring high performance from their physical assets, with moderate costs and at a controlled risk, increasing productivity, quality and competitiveness with safety. It is affected by some factors such as its operation and production planning, maintenance activities, management of resources and spare parts, type of maintenance, as well as the training, human reliability and aging of the equipment itself. This paper presents a methodology and a real case study focusing the analysis of the influence and impact of several operation and maintenance (O&M) activities on operational availability of a critical asset installed on an industrial line in the automotive production sector. The methodology developed is based on the application of a Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA) together with the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP), quantifying the direct influence of eight factors on the operational availability of critical equipment. The methodology developed provides very important information to optimize maintenance management, assuring a higher availability of critical industrial equipment.
