Lucas, C., Muraleedharan, G. and Guedes Soares, C. (2020), “Assessment of extreme waves in the North Atlantic Ocean by regional frequency analysis”, Applied Ocean Research, Vol. 100, pp. 102165

Regional frequency analysis is applied to North Atlantic Ocean data to obtain regional frequency distributions able to characterize regions that are considered homogeneous and formed by several sites. It uses the entire information on a regional scale to obtain an accurate estimation of the probability of occurrence of extreme events at a given location. Regional frequency analysis was implemented using 43 years (1958-2000) of hindcast data extracted from the HIPOCAS database. The domain of this area covers the latitudes 20.0oN to 68.0oN and the longitudes -50.0oW to -4.0oW, with a resolution grid of 1o X 1o. This approach can identify sites that lie close to each other but belong to different regions and in this way defines the areas in which the North Atlantic Ocean can be divided from a statistical point of view.
