Hashemzadeh, M., Garbatov, Y. and Guedes Soares, C. (2020), “Numerical Stress-Strain Analysis of Butt-Welded Plates during the Welding Process”, Developments in the Collision and Grounding of Ships and Offshore Structures, C. Guedes Soares (Ed.), Taylor and Francis Group, London, pp. 157-162

The objective of this work is to and analyse the stress-strain behaviour of butt-welded steel platessubjected to tensile load. In the first stepof the study, a numerical non-linear transient thermal analysis, based on the heat generated by the welding arc at any given instant of time using the Goldak double ellipsoidal heat source is performed. The finite element model is calibrated using the result of the real experimental measurements of the temperature generated by the welding process. In the second stage, for different temperaturesgenerated during the welding progress, mechanical FE analyses are performed to estimate the distortionand rotation at any single node of the butt-welded plates. In the third stage, a tensile specimen is generated, using FEMincorporating the displacements and rotations resulting from the previous mechanical FE analysis. In the final stage, non-linear and large deformation finite element analyses are performed to estimate the stress-strain behaviour and mechanical properties, namely the modulus of elasticity, yield stress, tensile strength, resilience, fracture toughness and total uniform elongation of the specimen subjected to a tensile load. The estimated stress-strain relationship of the butt-welded specimens accountingforthe presence of the distortion and residual stresses, induced by the welding process. The importance of the material property changes, as a function of the induced temperature during the welding process in the steel butt-welded specimen, is quantified anddiscussed.
