This paper presents a numerical model for the calculation of costs and transit times implied by multimodal transport solutions over complex networks of transportation. These models are used to explore different possibilities of multimodal transport chains, including SSS based legs, using either ro-ro ships or container ships. Aiming at increasing the role of SSS in the European Atlantic Area, these models are applied in a case study dedicated to the assessment of different multimodal transport chains in this broad geographical area. Competitive SSS-based transport chains are identified and conclusions on the relative importance of different transport parameters are drawn.
