Smiljko, R., Garbatov, Y. e Guedes Soares, C. (2000), “Finite Element Study of Stress Concentration Factors in Ship Knuckle Details”, Proceedings of the 3rd International Congress of Croatian Society of Mechanics, Dubrovnik, Croatia, 28-30 Setembro, pp. 367-374

The high tensile steel utilisation allows higher stress levels in structural details and at the same time a decrease of the member thickness and the build cost. The objective of this paper is to study the influence of different knuckle detail designs made of high tensile steel to the stress concentration factors with regards to the fatigue damage. A study summarises the results of the ship knuckle joint finite element method calculation. The finite element model of three knuckle specimens and their modifications are calculated and compared. It is concluded that by decreasing the scallop radius at the web of the joint the stress concentration factor increases from 3.57 (r = 100mm) to 5.89 (r = 25mm). Introducing of the additional bracket knee in the highly stressed area reduces the stress concentration factor 1.8 times.
