(2000), “Probabilistic Assessment of the Performance of Double-Hull Tankers with respect to Oil Outflow”, Proceedings of the IX International Maritime Association of Mediterranean Congress (IMAM´00), Cassella, P., Scamardella, a. e Festinese, G. (Eds.), Ischia, Itália, 2-6 Abril, pp. 47-55

This work determines the potential oil outflow from different concepts of double-hull tankers. Different internal arrangements are studied predicting their effectiveness in mitigating oil spills. The method adopted integrates the latest IMO regulations, using a direct probabilistic methodology. It incorporates distributions of damage location and penetration as compiled by IMO. The method is further enhanced by not assuming total width extent of damage in case of grounding, enabling in this way the assessment of the influence of longitudinal subdivision in the cargo space and in the double-bottom. Initial oil losses following impact and oil retention in the double-hull space were taken into consideration, as well as tidal drop and dynamic effects. Parametric studies about the influence of different internal subdivision characteristics and dimensions ratios on the environmental performance of double-hulls were carried out, for a series of collision and grounding scenarios.
