The fatigue strength assessment of ship knuckle details is performed in order to compare the alternative design solutions. Three-dimensional finite element models of a series of knuckle details are generated. The stress concentration factors in highly stressed areas are calculated and the fatigue damages are predicted based on S-N approach. It is concluded that the cold-formed knuckle detail has the lowest fatigue damage, which is explained by the absence of the weld toe in the highly stressed area and the lowest stress concentration due to the radius of the cold formed shape. It is noticed that difference between the results of calculations with the refined eight-node shell finite element model and the standard four-node shell model element model is not essential for the present knuckle details.
