A formulation is presented for the assessment of the reliability of a plate element subjected to compressive loads, non-linear corrosion and maintenance actions. This paper will examine how the plate collapse strength will vary in time because of corrosion and associated plate renewal. In the presence of general corrosion, the plate thickness will depend mainly on that effect and this will be random variable considered here to effect the net section. The paper suggests a solution describing the corrosion depth as a function of time and it is compared with existed data and approximations. Two-failure criteria of ultimate strength and corrosion are formulated and influences of different parameters are examined. The collapse strength against compressive loading is described by a function of time and the resulting reliability is quantified. The sensitivity of the reliability estimates with respect to several parameters is also studied. The reliability is predicted by a time variant formulation and the effects of repair and maintenance actions in the reliability assessment are shown.
