A time domain modelling method coupled with a finite element cable model is used for the study of a buoy moored with two different configurations: catenary and taut mooring systems. The highly dynamic wave energy converters in shallow water usually require coupling dynamic analysis between the floating body and the mooring system to accurately predict the loading on the lines, the body motion responses, fatigue life and the power productions. Stiffness curves and configurations for a single mooring line at various offsets and stiffness curve for the whole mooring system are obtained from static tests. Dynamic analysis in terms of the six degree-of-freedom buoy motion responses and the tension forces on the fairlead of each mooring line are carried out under regular waves. The simulation results are compared between catenary and taut mooring systems.
