An overview on synthetic mooring cables for marine applications is presented. The use of synthetic fibre ropes in mooring lines for marine applications is becoming more common due to the lower submerged mass per unit length, a lower cost per unit length and the potential to reduce peak loadings. A clear characterization of nonlinear mechanical behaviours of synthetic mooring ropes is essential to a mooring design for evaluating the performance of marine systems. Extensive tests have been performed by various researchers to characterize various elastic ropes with different constructions. The existing publications on the elastic mooring cables in marine application are reviewed and summarized in this paper, including material types, the mechanical properties and experimental tests. Summary with emphasis on the shallow water application is made.
