Numerical studies on clamped steel beams under transverse impact by relatively heavy masses made with the LSDYNA3D code are described and are compared with experimental results. Beams with different lengths were struck at several locations across the span with different impact energy. The impact was simulated numerically as the contact between two surfaces where an initial speed was applied to all nodes of the surface modelling the beginning of the contact. The mesh is generated with four node shell elements, which have good capability of representing bending moments and membrane forces in large deformations. In most of the results it can be observed that the energy absorption capability of the beams decreased with an increase of the beam thickness and that this capability decreased when the impact point was located near the supports, especially for higher incident energies. Increasing the incident energy as well as increasing the thickness of the beams, the effects of the elastic energy decrease, in almost the cases. This numerical study gave results in very good agreement with the experimental data.
