The aim of this paper is to evaluate the feasibility of the CFD open source solver to predict the wind turbine aerodynamic performance. The aerodynamic performance of a wind turbine has an important influence on the captures energy and on the aerodynamic loads on the support structure. The numerical method adopted in this paper, as the governing equations the Reynolds averaged Navier-Stokes, which are solved by the pimpleDyMFoam solver in OpenFOAM, and for the mesh movements the AMI method is employed. The National Renewable Energy Laboratory 5MW wind turbine was selected for the numerical simulations. The wind speed is constant at 21.8 m/s while the rotational velocity changes from 3 to 14 r/min and the blade pitch is fixed. The numerical results include the thrust forces and pressure distribution on the computational domain and on blade. Also the lift and drag coefficients of the wind turbine blade are discussed for different airfoil sections. The aerodynamic performance of the 5MWwind turbine is analyzed and compared against experimental results and numerical modeling results produced by the FAST code.
