Risso, G., Cau, C., Garbatov, Y. e Guedes Soares, C. (2015), “Fatigue strength analysis of longitudinal bulkheads of passenger ships with large openings”, 18th International Conference on Ships and Shipping Research (NAV 2015), 24-26 Junho, Milão, Itália, pp. 438-447

The objective of this study is to verify a new design solution in which the use of insert plates, made of high strength alloy steel, HSLA may improve the fatigue life of the door corner of the longitudinal bulkhead of a passenger ship. Several finite element analyses of the corner in the as-built configuration and with the new design solution, which contemplates the use of the insert plates made of HSLA, are performed. The fatigue life of the intact structure is evaluated based on the S-N approach, whereas the crack growth is estimated through the stress intensity factor at the simulated crack tip and the use of the Paris-Erdogan law. The fatigue stresses used for the fatigue damage and crack growth calculations are estimated based on two-step finite element structural analyses. In the first step, a global finite element analysis of the entire passenger ship subjected to real loading conditions is performed. In the second step, a local finite element sub model with a refined mesh is generated, where the degrees of freedom at the boundary conditions are taken from the global finite element analysis. The material properties for the crack growth calculations are estimated during the laboratory test campaign, carried out within the MOSAIC project. Finally, the advantage of adopting the new design solution of using insert plates made of HSLA steel in term of weight and cost savings is evaluated and discussed.
