The impact behaviour of single-skin laminates was investigated experimentally and described in terms of ´un-delaminated’, ‘delaminated’ and ‘fibre damage’ responses. The behaviour depended on the thickness to diameter ratio. Damage occurred at extremely low incident energies and damage modes were multiple, complex and interacting. Impact response was highly dependant on a large number of both material and impact event variables in a complex interacting manner. Dimensional analysis was used to develop scaling laws which were verified experimentally for the transverse impact on circular glasspolyester plates at three different scales. Although the model was a simplified one, the tests showed that it scaled the impact responses well for the elastic response. However, some ‘size effects’ were observed, especially for the damaged response. Current work aims to compare impact response of marine laminates with metal panels and to evaluate the possible use of quasi-static tests as a cheaper alternative to impact testing.
