The paper explores the implications of using time series of wave elevation as reference design conditions to calculate the wave induced structural loads on ships in heavy weather. The procedure is especially indicated to estimate nonlinear wave induced loads by time domain codes. An application example is presented for a containership subjected to a wave trace that was measured in a storm in Central North Sea during a severe storm. The measured wave time history is modified in order to investigate the influence of the wave steepness on the induced vertical motions and loads. The ship responses are calculated using a time domain strip method, in which the linear memory effects are consistently represented by convolution of memory functions. The method accounts for the most important nonlinear contributions affecting the vertical loads, namely those associated with the large relative motions between the non-vertical ship hull and the waves. Strong nonlinear effects are obtained for the vertical loads, especially for the vertical bending moment, in the sense that the sagging peaks magnitudes are significantly higher than those of the hogging peaks. The vertical motions are less sensitive to nonlinear effects.
