Petrova, P. e Guedes Soares, C. (2008), “Statistical and Spectral Properties of Bimodal Seas Generated in an Offshore Basin”, Proceedings of the Deepwater Offshore Technology Symposium (DTEC 2008), Shangai, China

The present study is based on data collected at the offshore basin of MARINTEK. The measurements represent three bimodal sea states with the wave systems propagating at 60º, 90º and 120º from each other. Using available criteria, the two-peak structure of the spectra is verified. The wave spectra are separated into swell and wind-sea components; the relative energy ratio between the areas under the associated curves (SSER) is estimated and is related with the statistics of the time series considered. Dependence is found between the normalized higher order cumulants describing the non-Gaussian surface and the predominant contribution of the wind-sea energy. Furthermore, the probabilities of exceedance of the individual wave heights are estimated and compared with the Rayleigh model and some analytical models that take into account the effects of spectral bandwidth and wave nonlinearities. The results are discussed with respect to three possible classes of sea states conditional on the value of SSER.
