This paper presents the results of an experimental work on the response of multi-layered defensive structures subjected to underwater contact explosions. For anti-explosive design, some important cabins of surface warships are set as multi-layered structures to resist underwater explosions and protect the inner equipment. The target experiment model is designed as a three-cabin box, an air, a fluid and an air cabin included from inside out, which is consisted of four plates with thickness 4mm. A series of experiments with increasing charge weight of 20g, 200g and 406.8g were conducted on this multi-layered structure. The damages and pressures of the test specimens were obtained. In general, it is shown that large damages and plastic deformations happened in the test structures, especially for the plate contacted with the dynamite. A trend of increasing damages was observed for an increase in charge, but little increase for the inner plate. Some important factors and the role of the cabin with different medium are also analyzed by the damage and energy dissipation. It is found that the multi-layered structure can resist the explosive loading significantly.
