Petrova, P.G. e Guedes Soares, C. (2007), “Maximum Wave Crest and Height Statistics of Irregular and Abnormal Waves in an Offshore Basin”, Proceedings of the 3rd International Workshop on Applied Offshore Hydrodynamics, 17-19 October, Rio de Janeiro, Brasil

The maximum crests and heights of random irregular deep-water waves generated in an offshore basin from a JONSWAP spectrum were fitted by linear and second order statistical models. The extreme waves found to fulfil the criteria for the crest and height abnormality indices were referred to as abnormal waves. Statistically, the nonlinear behaviour of the considered wave fields has been demonstrated by means of the coefficients of skewness and kurtosis, estimated from the time series. Analytical formulae, taking into account the effects of spectral bandwidth and finite depth, were used to improve the predictions of the normalized cumulants. The obtained results showed that the largest crests are well described by the models with the coefficient of kurtosis included. The maximum wave heights and the observed abnormal extremes agree well with the second-order theory, although the linear predictions do not deviate much from the observations either. The tank data results are compared with results for full-scale data, gathered during a storm at the North Alwyn platform at North Sea. The storm data were found to demonstrate different statistical behaviour
