Releases of fluids in and from Floating Production Storage and Offloading (FPSO) vessels and Floating Storage Units (FSU) may result into severe consequences like causing potential pollution and/or explosions and fires. This paper presents the results of an analysis performed to a large dataset describing spill/release events in FPSOs and FSUs occurred from 1980 to 2005. First, statistics on release events are provided in terms of operations involved, severity and injuries with the objective of identifying their frequency and trend. Then, the paper identifies from a brief description of the events the module/systems, the equipment and activities involved in the spills/releases, the type of fluid released and the number of shutdowns of the processing units. The spills/releases analyzed include water, inert gas, chemical leaks and those with escalation potential such as mix of hydrocarbon gas, condensate and crude oil leaks.
