(2018), “Assessment of distortion and residual stresses in butt welded plates made of different steels”, Maritime Transportation and Harvesting of Sea Resources, Guedes Soares, C. & Teixeira A.P. (Eds.), Taylor & Francis Group, London, UK, pp. 617-623

The objective of this work is to analyse the welding induced temperature, distortion and residual stresses of butt-welded plates made of different steels. Two types of steels, ASTM A36 and ST37 (S235) are considered in the butt-welded plates of A36-A36, ST37-ST37 and A36-ST37 steels. A two-step non-linear finite element analysis is employed to perform the thermo-mechanical analysis. The thermal analysis estimates the temperature distribution around the simulated weld, employing the mechanical properties that vary as a function of the applied temperature and the type of material that the welded plates are made. The thermal and mechanical analyses are performed separately. Both analyses are based on the finite element method using the commercial software ANSYS. The boundary conditions for the thermal analysis are considered to be conduction, convection and radiation and in the case of the mechanical analysis free boundary conditions are applied and only the two ends of the weld are fixed to restrain the structures. Several case studies are investigated and conclusions are derived.
